AI VS THE ENVIRONMENT

Beyond the Energy Equation

WELCOME TO MY THOUGHTS…

A place where I often get lost, so I’m drawing a map! 🧠 📜

ENERGY: Is AI really bad for the environment? 🤔

FUN FINDS: PowerPoint is dead (hooray) 🙌

Let’s Go!

AI vs THE ENVIRONMENT

AI is a power-hungry beast. Training GPT-4 uses enough electricity to power 130 American homes for a year, even with all those deep fat fryers!

But focusing on AI's energy diet misses the bigger picture. AI isn't just coming; it's here, ordering your groceries and predicting your next impulse buy. The real question is: how do we make this digital revolution work for our planet?

Take Walmart's AI system, which crunches 200 variables to predict demand with 95% accuracy, preventing thousands of unwanted products from clogging up landfills. Meanwhile, Tesco's "smart expiry" system has cut food waste by 33%, saving 18,000 tons of perfectly good sandwiches from an undignified, and frankly upsetting end.

Remember the great heatwave jacket crisis at Uniqlo? No? That's because their AI caught an unexpected temperature spike and redistributed lightweight jackets before customers even knew they wanted them. Twelve million dollars saved, and more importantly, no warehouses full of unwanted winter coats. This isn't just good business. It's AI playing weather forecaster, fashion consultant, and environmental guardian all at once.

Amazon's AI has cut excess inventory by 25% while keeping 99.8% of customers happy with their two-day shipping addiction. Fewer warehouses, fewer returns, fewer trucks making needless trips. It all adds up. For every megawatt-hour of electricity AI consumes in inventory management, it saves eight through optimised logistics.

If you think AI is reasonably impressive today, just remember, this is THE WORST it will ever be. Google's latest TPU v5 chips are 30 times more efficient than their predecessors and Microsoft's new underwater data centres, cut energy needs by 95%, using the ocean to cool the servers.

Looking ahead, McKinsey (if you trust those guys?) estimates AI in retail alone could slash global carbon emissions by 290 million tons annually, the equivalent to shutting down 75 coal fired power plants.

As AI makes waste more visible and less acceptable, it's creating a new normal where efficiency isn't just good business, it's a cultural imperative.

The real power of AI isn't in what it consumes, it's in what it changes.

5 points if you can guess which side of the fence i’m on.

Beautiful.ai Still lay in bed reading danthehuman? Forgot about that presentation you have to give to your boss at 10am. Beautiful.ai automates your digital presentation, including generating images. I have had a decent play with this platform and got some great results. I did find the user experience to be a little clunky but if you became a power user of this, I definitely think you would be throwing PowerPoint to the lions.

Spiral.computer Do waaaay less work as a content creator. Create one article, video or podcast and automatically re-purpose it into suitable content for other platforms like LinkedIn, X, Facebook and the usual extended list.

Personally, I do this to a small extent with my own make.com automation for free (I can’t sit here all day). If you want me to share this automation with you, send me an email 📧

PROMPT: GIVE ME A FUN FACT ABOUT ICELAND.

Iceland has no mosquitoes! It's one of the few places on Earth where these pesky insects can't survive, thanks to the country's harsh climate and chemical composition of its soil. The frequent freezing and thawing cycles make it impossible for mosquito larvae to develop.
